Effect of Heat Treatment Prior to Direct Hot-Extrusion Processing of Al–Cu–Li Alloy

This study presents and explains the results of first steps in developing high strength aluminium alloy (Al–Cu–Li) wires for ultimate purpose using them as feedstock DED (directed energy deposition) techniques, such wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Powder metallurgy (PM) is proposed method to produce due flexibility adapt composition lower temperatures used with respect casting. Two PM routes are proposed. The route comprises blending powders, uniaxial pressing, hot extrusion green compact obtain a bar; second includes heat treatment compact, promote diffusion alloying elements before extrusion. Further steps, rolling or drawing, necessary from bar. work studies effects processing parameters on properties extruded bars compares two employed, special attention paid treatment. confirms that homogenises microstructure requires higher applied force time. characterisation show presence Al–Cu Al–Cu–Li phases microstructure.
